The attendant told me that the inspection tech is a stickler for tire wear. My rears are fine. The fronts are close to but definitively above the wear mark. If I get failed for that... I’m gonna do a burnout in their parking lot.

Only kidding. But an explanation of whatever tread depth rule that violates will be demanded and I will not leave until that happens. I hate to be a pain but if I leave here with an R for that reason I’m gonna be livid. That means paying another shop to put winters on the front to pass, another 3-6 hours of waiting time there, then another three of inspection wait time AGAIN. Not to mention the extra 3 months of unnecessary wear on those winters. I have a bad feeling about this....

why not do the burnout, and then go and get 4 new tires?

I just moved and my bank account is still recovering :/ also I might lower + wheels the Q ship in the spring so I’m loath to buy new tires I’ll only use for a couple months

It’s hard not to complain about a tech hassling you about tire wear, but I just keep thinking about a local high school senior who was driving his full size bronco to school this spring during some heavy rain. The photograph the local online news rag tastlessly circulated showed the bronco upside down in a swollen creek after he lost control of the truck. All of the tires sticking in the air looked like racing slicks. :o(

I remember being annoyed at my dad for hounding me about tire maintenance as a teen, but I am thankful these days that he never let me drive on tires with no tread.

Perhaps that tech is motivated by a similar tragedy. If you're above the mark, you're above the mark though!

What’s the state spec vs your actual tires?

edit - if you are in MA (as your lead photo implies) the depth needs to be 2/32. If you are above that you should complain to the station, and if they do nothing the state. The state can be pretty hard on inspection stations suspected of using falsified inspections to make sales.

Yeah she said it was at 2/32. This sucks. I’m sure a gas station would have passed me...

That's the worst. I have my own tire machines at home, a little north of Boston if you want to learn how to mount and balance your own tires. TireRack drop ships to me for other people all the time. If you are interested send me an email at my username here plus yahoo.com.

haha damn just saw this, totally would have! I’m one of those “type a personalities” so I just immediately took two tires to a shop. That’s awesome though apparently there are quite a few of us around here? A couple weeks ago I even saw an isuzu SUV with an oppo sticker at a show. Maybe some kind of boston/nh/ct oppo meetup could be a thing

edit: **took two newer tires I had to a shop and had them mounted
